National SWANA Lithium-Ion Batteries Focus

Continued Focus on Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-Ion Batteries continue to be a focus for SWANA. Earlier this week, a joint statement with NWRA was released that addressed the critical issue of lithium-ion battery disposal. This release was picked up by several industry news outlets, including Waste360Waste TodayRecycling Product NewsScrap Monster,  and Waste Advantage.

SWANA signed a coalition letter along with the Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), and the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The letter focused on the safety concerns with CPSC’s failure to provide accurate instructions to consumers on how recalled lithium-ion batteries should be returned safely. We will be meeting with CPSC on Tuesday, January 21st to discuss the letter and our concerns.

SWANA will participate at a workshop hosted by the US EPA on Mid-Format Consumer Battery Labeling and Collection on January 27th.  A few members of the SWANA Lithium-Ion Battery Workgroup will also be in attendance. If any of your colleagues are attending, please let us know.
